Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is one of the top global causes of death and is a major cause of permanent disability, and the burden of stroke is increasing across the world. However, factors that can predict a stroke are little known and studied, and hence Dr. Mazwi’s talk is of great relevance for operating “prevention is better than cure” in brain strokes. Refined knowledge in this field could save many.
Dr. Nicole Mazwi is an instructor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the Harvard Medical School, and since 2014, has served as the Co-Director of the Harvard Medical School Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship Program at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. She is the first-ever dedicated consult physiatrist in the Massachusetts General Hospital Neurologic Intensive Care Unit. Her clinical and research interests lie in rehabilitation of neurologic disorders (brain injury, stroke etc.), spasticity management including Botox and phenol injections, and outcome predictors for brain injury and stroke survivors.
She received her medical degree from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her internship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital/Sinai Hospital of Baltimore Internal Medicine Residency program and her Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital/Harvard Medical School program where she was Chief Resident. Dr. Mazwi completed a fellowship in Neurologic Rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital and joined the staff at both hospitals in 2012.
Best,
