Dear faculty, students, and staff,

Please see below email from Mary Callahan, registrar’s office, for information on changes to the 2019-2020 academic calendar. There are date changes for spring registration day, first day of classes, Patriot’s day holiday, and commencement.

> Hello,
>
> With the start of the new academic year, I wanted to call your attention to the 2019-2020 Academic Calendar and changes that resulted from the compression of time between the end of finals and Commencement. These changes impact everyone at the Institute, and your help communicating them to faculty, students, and staff in your department will be most critical.
> Although the calendar shifts occur in the spring term, you may receive questions soon, if you haven’t already. Earlier this week, Vice Chancellor Waitz sent an email to all students reminding them to keep spring Registration Day in mind as they make their December/January travel plans (Reg Day is on a Friday rather than the traditional Monday). The Chair of the Faculty also noted the changes to the Academic Calendar in his start-of-term email to faculty earlier this month.
>
> Some key points to remember:
> Members of the MIT community should note date changes — spring Registration Day, the first and last day of classes, the Patriots’ Day student holiday, and Commencement — as well as revisions to the length and format of the spring final exam period.
> Instructors will also need to be especially attentive to the shortened window for submitting grades in the spring term. Additionally, their teaching plans may be affected by a change to the number of class days on each day of the week.
>
> I hope that you will assist us in sharing this information with your community as you see fit through the upcoming months. To aid, we have published a new webpage <https://registrar.mit.edu/calendar/2019-2020-academic-calendar-changes>, which outlines the ways that the 2019-2020 Academic Calendar differs from last year. If you or others have questions, please visit our resource page athttps://registrar.mit.edu/calendar-change <https://registrar.mit.edu/calendar-change>, or email us at registrar-www at mit.edu <mailto:registrar-www at mit.edu>.
>
> An academic calendar change on this order is not done frequently. I can imagine that there may be some confusion in adapting to the changes. Please know how much we appreciate your help as we prepare the community to adopt the new calendar.
