Dear First-Year Advisors and Academic Administrators,

I am writing to make sure you are aware of the new Academic Exploration Subjects available to students this spring.

You may be familiar with established exploration subjects such as 2.00B and 16.00. However, over the past year, new spring subjects were added in Courses 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 21G that are designed to be accessible for first-year students and great for exploring majors and minors.

You can find the full list here: http://uaap.mit.edu/academic-exploration-subjects<https://mit.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=88f983a0e3c2a43fb2a2eabd0&id=5eb74c9d9e&e=65bec7d95e>. Subjects that were created specifically with exploration in mind have been bolded.

I encourage you to reach out to students who may have interests in these fields and ask them to consider taking one or more of these subjects. Many of them are shorter in duration (1-3 units) and they provide an authentic taste of what you can do with certain majors. They are also a great way to meet upper-level students, faculty, and alumni in fields of interest.

My office will also be hosting a drop-in breakfast event<https://mit.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=88f983a0e3c2a43fb2a2eabd0&id=332c79d6dc&e=65bec7d95e> on registration day for first-year students to meet many of the instructors teaching Academic Exploration Subjects this term. Please encourage your advisees to stop by on their way to your advising meeting.

While these courses generally do not provide credit for major requirements or GIRs, they could spark interests or make personal connections that will last a lifetime. I’m hoping you would help explain that value to the students you advise.

If your department does not yet have a subject that serves this function, we would be happy to work with you to develop a subject for next year.

We already have multiple proposals in the works for Fall 2019, and we look forward to building a richer landscape for first-year students to explore.

Sincerely,
Ian
