Project Description:
Macrophages are often the most common immune cells present in tumors, yet their ability to attack cancer has been underappreciated. We have found that macrophages can be manipulated to attack cancer cells when provided with an appropriate stimulus. This UROP project will focus on identifying new ways to stimulate macrophages to attack and eliminate cancer cells. The project will involve in vitro experiments in which human macrophages are combined with cancer cells to evaluate immune activation. There will also be opportunities to perform in vivo experiments using mouse models of cancer. The UROP student will have the opportunity to contribute to research publications resulting from this work.

This UROP project will ideally be continued long-term with the expectation of full-time work during IAP and Summer 2020. Students with an interest in pursuing M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. programs are encouraged to apply.
