Intro to Artistic Experimentation (Daemons) is a hands-on studio is an introduction to artistic practice and critical visual thinking.
Through hands-on demos (woodworking, metal-working, mould-making, sewing, and/or lighting), quick activities, readings, guest lectures, field trips, presentations, and project-driven explorations, students are asked to consider three themes — Body Extension, Making Public, and Shaping Time. The main focus of this course is to encourage students to explore topics that interest them and that relate to the theme, developing initial curiosities and interests into two final projects with iterations and prototypes along the way. Additionally, to encourage both top-down and bottom-up learning, students are asked to complete three short technical exercises, each which can be accomplished in time provided during class.
This course takes inspiration from the notion of a “daemon.” For ancient Greeks, a daemon referred to a divinity, a being betwixt and between humans and the supernatural, an inner spirit, or inspiring force. Today, “daemon” commonly refers to a discrete background process that handles requests for services such as print spooling and file transfers, and is dormant when not required.
Shop time will be provided during class in order to allow students to use the facilities and to receive ample one-on-one feedback from course instructor and TA. Additionally, to support the development of students’ artwork, each of the three principal projects will be workshopped in the form of a brainstorm session, work-in-progress feedback session, and final critique.
Guiding questions for these three themes are as follows: Body Extension, Shaping Time, Making Public.
