Would you be able to help spread the word about this new interdisciplinary HASS concentration? If there is any other information that I could provide you with, or additional formats that would be helpful, please let me know!

-----

I'm writing today to let you know of a new HASS concentration which is being launched this year called Computing and Society. It’s an interdisciplinary concentration which includes classes from 9 different SHASS units. Students need to take four of the classes on the list to complete the concentration, which will help to fulfill their HASS GIR.

The goal of the concentration is to help students gain a greater understanding of how changes in computational power have refashioned fundamental questions about community, identity, democracy, and knowledge itself. Students majoring in computing fields will gain greater fluency to analyze the tools they work with, and also new ideas about applications. Students will learn to factor in new variables and pose new kinds of questions about what might constitute the successes and failures of innovation. Please note that this concentration is open to all MIT students; not just those majoring on computing.

For more information, visit shass.mit.edu/compucon<https://shass.mit.edu/undergraduate/interdisciplinary/conc/computing>. I’ve also attached a PDF with the information in case it’s helpful to have on-hand for advising meetings or to give to students in person.

If you have any questions about the requirements, please contact the concentration advisor, Prof. William Deringer (deringer at mit.edu<mailto:deringer at mit.edu> or 617-253-9651).

Thank you!
Karen
