9.17, Systems Neuroscience Laboratory
How does the brain generate thoughts and behaviors? The recent revolution in systems neuroscience has led to incredible progress on this age old question. In 9.17, students will learn and apply the theory and practice of cutting-edge system neuroscience techniques and data analysis methods to examine how brains work. Examples include: action potential recording, in vivo measurement of circuit activity, optogenetic control of brain activity, and more. Students will gain familiarity with neuroanatomy, neurophysiological techniques, quantitative animal behavior, and MATLAB-based data analysis. The course uses experimental animal models. Assignments include weekly preparation for lab sessions, two research reports, and a series of basic computer programming tutorials (MATLAB). Instruction and practice in written communication provided. Permission of instructor can replace prerequisites.
