Join us in exploring the vibrant field of microbiome research at the Microbiome Club's General Body Meeting. Learn about progress we've made as a club and how to get involved by joining our board and attending upcoming events! Our speakers, Dr. Mathilde Poyet, Dr. Mathieu Groussin, and Dr. Ainara Sistiaga– co-founders of the Microbiome Conservancy, will speak to us about their microbiome initiative.
"Global evolution of genomes and functions in the human gut microbiome"
We will introduce our recent initiative - the Global Microbiome Conservancy<http://microbiomeconservancy.org/about/working-group/>. This international effort aims to conserve and characterize the full human gut microbial biodiversity, which is currently diminishing at rapid pace around the world due to industrialization. As part of this initiative, we built a biobank of more than 11,000 human gut bacterial isolates in pure culture, paired with whole genome sequences, using stool samples collected worldwide, offering unprecedented genetic, geographic, and lifestyle resolutions. We will present preliminary analyses on these global samples, isolates and genomes, showing that the functions of gut microbiomes can dynamically and rapidly change across populations and within people.
