SUBJECT: Join The Quest for Intelligence: Quest UROP deadline: Thursday, September, 20, 2018
We launched The Quest last spring to dive deep on questions about human and machine intelligence. What makes humans so smart? Can we teach machines to be more like us? As we hand over more work and responsibility to machines, how do we make sure they behave ethically and in our best interest?
This fall, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is offering 100 positions under The Quest umbrella that build on the artificial intelligence revolution of the last decade. This is your chance to contribute to the ideas and technologies that will shape the future of humanity as profoundly as agriculture did 10,000 years ago. The projects involve each department at the Institute, and like The Quest itself, are meant to break down the barriers that divide disciplines and can slow discovery.
The Quest aims to advance our understanding of how humans and machines learn, and leverage these insights to solve problems currently beyond our grasp. We want to build robots that are empathetic and can navigate the human world with greater autonomy. We want to develop algorithms that can pick out patterns in millions of images to diagnose lung cancer. We want to guarantee that self-driving cars will be safe, and that the black box algorithms that have allowed artificial intelligence to blossom will be free of prejudice. Our Quest-themed UROP projects explore the most exciting technical and ethical challenges posed by an increasingly automated society.
Students often credit their undergraduate research experience with helping them decide on a career path. Working closely with faculty, graduate students and other classmates, you will gain practical skills in a real-world work environment. Here is a chance to follow your curiosity and work on the frontier of understanding human and machine intelligence.
As you evaluate research options for this semester, talk with faculty about UROP project in their group aligned with the Quest,
