Dear Friends and Alumni of MIT Biology,
It’s summertime – long days, warm nights, and recently completed graduations. Now that commencement is behind us, we welcome all our graduates – 54 BSs, 2 MSs, and 29 PhDs – as alumni. Many postdoctoral researchers have also completed their training and launched their careers in academia and industry. To all of you: We have been inspired by your creativity and brilliance, are proud of what each of you accomplished, and look forward to hearing about your careers and your lives. Please stay in touch.
Summertime also means the arrival of our MSRP Bio students – undergraduates from other institutions who spend a summer performing research with us. For many of these students, it’s their first time on the MIT campus, but it’s often not their last. Since the start of MSRP Bio in 2003, 56 alumni have enrolled at MIT for PhDs. Of those, 37 enrolled in Biology: 19 have graduated, and 18 are current Biology graduate students. One former MSRP Bio student who graduated from MIT is now a faculty member. Five other MSRP alumni are current MIT postdocs (two in Biology).
We will soon have a new faculty member joining the department. Ankur Jain has accepted a faculty position and will join the Whitehead Institute as its newest member and the department as an assistant professor in September. We will be opening new faculty searches in the fall, and encourage those of you looking for faculty positions to apply!
In this summer newsletter, we also share faculty, administrative, and alumni news; recent happenings around the department; and highlights of some of the research we have published in the last few months.
