Extended Biology Community,
It is with great pleasure that I announce today’s launch of a new Biology website. This project was long overdue and the results are due to the contributions and efforts of many in our community.
One of our primary goals was to develop a website that does a better job serving our external audience of potential undergraduate majors, graduate students, postdocs, faculty, staff, and others, and answers the overarching question “Why MIT Biology?”, whilst simultaneously providing plenty of practical information for our internal Biology community.
The site highlights the contributions of our faculty, staff, and trainees; shares “testimonials” from both current trainees and alumni, as well as some donors; and details the range of our educational endeavors, including undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral training for those in the MIT community, as well as outreach efforts that serve undergraduates from outside MIT, and high school teachers and students.
The site features a news feed; automatically updated PubMed searches both on our home page and on individual faculty profiles; and videos, both in our video gallery and on faculty profiles. We have organized the research into 10 research areas (each depicted by a research icon). We display and describe our research locations and core facilities; offer both a public events calendar (primarily of our colloquia) and a more extensive department calendar (that you will have to log into in order to see), and both faculty and staff directories. Much of the information in the previous site has been retained but is now displayed in a more easily scannable format. In addition, the site is mobile-responsive and accessible.
As I mentioned above, many individuals have lent their time and talents to see this project through to fruition. Please join me in thanking the design firm OPUS, Inc.; Caitlin Pfitzer our project manager; core project team members Stephen Bell, Rebecca Chamberlain, Dan Delgado, Raleigh McElvery, and Vivian Siegel; Julia Keller who helped in the early stages of design firm selection; the many who aided with content development including Janice Chang, Amy Keating, Dennis Kim, Mike Laub, and Mandana Sassanfar; Crystal Boateng, Daniel Griffin, Joshua Stone, and Zella Pirello who helped upload content; in addition to current students, alumni, postdocs, faculty, and others who provided feedback and testing along the way.
Our project team will continue to meet regularly to evaluate how the site can remain current and respond to any changing needs.
I would love to hear your feedback!
Alan
