Subject: IAP Subject in Israel :: Agricultural Microbiology :: Apply by 9/27
Date: September 26, 2017 at 12:36:49 PM EDT
Dear Students,
I am sending this email to advertise a special subject, 1.S992, I will be teaching over IAP (3 units). The class is called Agricultural Microbiology (flyer attached) and it will taught in Israel, at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev together with Prof. Itzhak Mizrahi, a world expert in the field. The class is going to be very hands-on, with over 50% lab and independent work focused on reverse-engineering the microbial communities that inhabit the cow rumen and allow the animal to digest pant fibers. The day-to-day experience will involve the isolation of microbes using anaerobic techniques and the analysis of these organisms using genomic and metabolic data (more info in the flyer).
The class is supported by MISTI and an NSF grant, so costs of travel and accommodation are covered, but we have limited space. I have therefore created an application form for those interested.
Important dates:
* Application deadline: Wed Sept 27.
* Class: Jan 7 - Jan 21st (two weeks)
* Decisions will be announced no later than Oct 4.

Best wishes,
Otto
