The PhD Program in Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is looking for talented, ambitious young scientists to join our program. The primary thrust of our program is to integratively analyze data to better diagnose, treat, and prevent disease. Our research is highly innovative and interdisciplinary, involving bioinformatics, computational biology, disease biology, drug discovery and development, genomics, and human genetics.

Our program is the ideal training environment for young scientists who wish to use mathematics and computer science to advance biology and medicine. Our research is highly innovative and interdisciplinary, we have a world-class faculty and strong students, and we are deeply committed to training the next generation of scientific leaders. In particular, our flexible curriculum enables students to direct their own education, our small program affords our studentsextensive mentorship, our students have a strong peer network, our affiliations with the Mount Sinai Graduate School and other area institutions provide our students numerous coursework opportunities, and our affiliation with Mount Sinai Hospital, one of the largest healthcare providers in the US, provides our studentsunparalleled access to clinical collaborators and data.

4th most NIH funding among genetics departments
22nd ranked medical school
30 PhD students
122 basic science and clinical faculty
12,672 compute cores and 20 PB of storage

Student community
Currently, we have 30 PhD students. Our students have a wide range of scientific and engineering backgrounds from top-ranked undergraduate programs such as Duke, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Mount Sinai has six additional PhD programs, an MD/PhD program, an MD program, and several MS programs. Together, these programs provide our students the resources of a large institution, as well as the flexibility of a small program.

Student outcomes
Many of our students have published in top journals such as Science and have gone on to faculty jobs at top universities such as Columbia, as well as careers at top biomedical companies such as Amgen, Novartis, and Phizer.

Laboratory rotations
To help you explore potential thesis projects and advisers, during your first year, you will have the opportunity to conduct three 10-week research "rotations" with three faculty members.

Curriculum
To enable our students to create their own curriculum, we have flexible course requirements which include six elective courses, a journal club, and two seminars. Through partnerships with other area institutions, our students can also take courses in mathematics, computer science, and other quantitative disciplines at other area schools.

Career development programs and clubs
We have a wide range of programs to help students explore careers in academia, industry, and government such as biotechnology, consulting, entrepreneurship, and public health clubs.

Stipend and housing
The stipend for the 2017-18 academic year is $36,000. This stipend is periodically adjusted for inflation. Students who are awarded fellowships also receive a $2,000 bonus each year.

As a student, you will be guaranteed subsidized housing in our residence hall. The residence hall has a 24-hour doorman, a fitness room, basketball courts, and an entertainment lounge.
