Do you encounter STEM students who want to address the ethical and legal implications of scientific advancements such as gene editing, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience in law? Do you advise pre-med students who want to learn more about bioethical challenges of emerging medicine? Do you know students who are passionate about science and philosophy and are seeking a career at their intersection?

The Duke Masters in Bioethics & Science Policy<http://a.insgly.net/api/trk?id=emailclick&i=664452&eid=62133841&url=http%3a%2f%2fscienceandsociety.duke.edu%2flearn%2fma&env=https%3a%2f%2fgoogleapps.insight.ly> teaches science leaders how to make scientific advancements more accessible, just, and better integrated into society.

If you know any students who sit at the intersection of science and society and want to do more with their education, we’d love to meet them.

Who Studies Bioethics & Science Policy?

  * Bioscience majors who want to leverage their degree to improve science analysis, communication, and policy development within government, academia, or private industry

  * PreMed students seeking training on the ethical and policy considerations of medicine such as end of life options, genetic engineering, and neuroscience.

  * Engineering majors who want to ensure scientific innovations benefit society and are applied to solve some of society’s greatest challenges

What do they learn?

The Duke Master’s in Bioethics & Science Policy program teaches students how to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to myriad complex issues at the intersection of science, technology, ethics, and policy. Our curriculum is distinct in its focus on science policy, rather than bioethics alone. Today’s world of rapid progress in the sciences has seen an increased demand for professionals with expertise in the ethical and policy implications of an increasingly broad range of scientific areas including engineering and computer science. Our expanded focus provides a broader education, opens more opportunities to graduating students, and prepares students to meet an ever-growing need in society.

“Throughout college, I developed an interest in the ethics of end of life and palliative medicine. Both the coursework and mentors in the Duke Masters in Bioethics & Science Policy program have shaped me to approach medical school with a broader persepective of what it means to serve others in medicine and become a voice in future discussions surrounding the ethics and policy of end of life care.”

- Stephanie Vereb, MA Bioethics & Science Policy Class of 2017

What do they do after graduation?

Our graduates follow their passions into careers or further study. They write policy at companies such as Bain & Company (management consulting firm), Helix (Silicon Valley consumer genetic testing company), Editas Medicine (Boston genome editing company), and QuintilesIMS (Durham clinical trials company) . Some graduates continue their education in law school or medical school. Others find positions in academia or government agencies such as the National Human Genome Research Institute.
