H, I’m Nicole and I’m a junior at MIT. I’ve been working for Teach for America for almost a year now. We’re all getting a great education here at MIT, but educational inequity is actually a huge problem in our country. Many of our schools are underfunded, understaffed, and don’t have the kind of high-quality teachers that students need to really believe in themselves.
Teach for America is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting this issue of educational inequity. Teach for America takes qualified leaders, trains them on how to be a great teacher, and then supports them as they teach for two years in an urban American school. It takes more than just a great teacher to turn a community around, it takes someone who can combine passion, innovation, and success the way all of you are doing here at MIT. I’m sure that each and every one of you has what it takes to do some really great things for our nation’s schools, and students would be SO lucky to have you!
Teach for America is great if you’re thinking about a career in teaching, but is also a good fit if you’ve got other things on your mind. Teach for America partners with many grad schools (Harvard Med, Duke Medical, Columbia Law, Stanford Business, to name a few) to help set you up after you complete your two years of teaching. Additionally, many companies know how prestigious and rigorous working for Teach for America is, and so they recruit directly from Teach for America alums (Google, Bain, JP Morgan, McKinsey, GE, etc.). All in all, Teach for America is a very meaningful and celebrated way to start off your career.
A ton more information can be found at teachforamerica.org<http://teachforamerica.org/>. If you have any questions at all, or just want to learn more about American education, please contact me at mikon at mit.edu<mailto:mikon at mit.edu>. And if you are thinking about applying or even just considering the possibility, please let me know and I can provide you with more details.

Thanks so much,
Nicole
