I am pleased to inform you that the Economics Department will offer 14.11, Economics of Crime, this coming fall semester. It will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4 p.m. in 1-190. The instructor will be Professor Sara Heller from the University of Pennsylvania. You should be able to add the class to your fall pre-registration if you are interested. This is a HASS class that may be used toward an economics concentration or minor. A description of the class follows:
Applies economic theory and methods to the study of crime. Uses basic supply and demand principles to think about why, where, and when illegal behavior occurs, and what the government might do to reduce it. Explores the empirical literature to understand what incarceration and policing do, how illegal markets (and their regulation) work, whether policies outside of criminal justice matter, and how benefit/cost analysis informs decisions about crime prevention.
