Winter Hiring is Open
JYI is seeking undergraduate students
for integral positions on our scientific journal.
The Journal of Young Investigators (JYI) is an independent, non-profit, peer-reviewed, online science journal that is managed entirely by and for undergraduate students from across the world. JYI’s innovative manuscript review process serves as a platform for undergraduates to be involved in every step of the peer-review process, a valuable experience that cannot be found anywhere else. Our staff is made up entirely of undergraduate students, with the assistance of faculty and professional mentors. All of our staff receive comprehensive training from their department, which can include corporate management, science writing, journalism, editing, finance management, and programming. Since its founding in 1997, JYI has been the pioneering journal for reviewing undergraduate research, publishing science news, and providing career information. JYI’s unique mission has been recognized in Science, Nature, EurekAlert!, The Chronicle on Higher Education, and The New York Times.
________________________________
We are currently accepting applications for positions in our executive board:
* The Director of the Science Career Center (DCC) heads the Science Career Center department within the Editorial Division at JYI. Typical responsibilities include making article assignments for journalists and editors; managing on-going writing cycles; approving articles prior to publication; and interviewing, hiring, and training new staff members. Leadership and responsibilities are largely shared with the Senior News and Features Editor (SNFE), with the DCC focusing on spotlighting science careers for undergraduates through interview and feature articles. As a member of the Executive Board of JYI, the DCC also develops and participates in projects that improve the internal structure of the entire journal.
* The Chief Communications Officer (CCO) is responsible for managing all communications between JYI and academic institutions, as well as the general public. Responsibilities include recruitment of new staff and manuscripts, marketing, public outreach, and managing all of JYI’s presence in social media. The CCO helps keep JYI at the forefront of undergraduate science publishing as well as all aspects of academia.
* The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for JYI’s budget and overall financial health. This includes managing JYI’s quarterly and annual budgets, developing JYI’s medium- and long-term strategy for financial growth to fund new and ongoing initiatives, and leading the overall process and strategy for securing grants with the help of our Board of Directors. The CFO ultimately ensures that JYI continuously receives financial support to achieve its goals of improving undergraduate science education.
We are additionally accepting applications for other editorial positions:
* Layout Designer (LD) is responsible for designing the pdf layouts of all publications, requiring an average commitment of 5 hours per week. He or she utilizes Adobe InDesign software to create layouts for research and editorial articles that are both easy to read and visually appealing. The LD is also involved with designing the layouts for special issues, such as the annual Best of JYI print publication, as well as JYI promotional materials. The LD position combines science journalism with creative processes to provide excellent experience in all aspects of visual design.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Previous experience with JYI is not required.
