Subject: Fwd: MIT2016 Serve-a-Thon, Tues the 19th

As part of the MIT2016 celebrations, the Graduate Student Council (GSC) is working directly with the City of Cambridge and the MIT2016 Together in Service Committee to put on a hackathon-style event that we hope will attract over a hundred undergraduates, graduate students, and local high schoolers. The event will address current pressing civic needs in Cambridge including street redesign, design of a narrow-body bus shelter, creation of tree-friendly sidewalks, public exercise equipment, and planning the future of parking in Cambridge.

Even though the GSC planned this event, it is open to ALL STUDENTS (including undergrads) and could be a great opportunity for students to do community service in an interesting format that could immediately address pressing civic needs.

Event Summary

  *   April 19 (a student holiday), 10 AM-4 PM, in the brand new E52 Samberg Conference Center
  *   3 free food opportunities: breakfast beforehand (starting at 9:00), lunch during the event, and a reception afterward (starting around 5:00)
  *   Hackathon-style event focused on real civic challenges currently facing Cambridge
  *   Guidance from relevant City staff and community members (including high school student participants)
  *   Prizes including grants for opportunities to work with City staff to bring ideas to prototype/testing stages
