Summer 2016 Fellowships Now Open

The MIT Office of Sustainability is currently hiring three student fellows to work as part of the team for Summer 2016.  Student Fellows will work 40 hours per week from May-August.

Pay ranges from $15-$18/hour depending on student level and ability. Positions are open to both undergraduate and graduate level students. MIT student preferred, although open to non-MIT students.

1. Technical Research Fellow

MIT’s Office of Sustainability<http://sustainability.mit.edu/> (MITOS) is seeking a full-time summer Sustainability Fellow to research, prepare, and write supporting documentation for emerging sustainability work at MIT.  The Technical Research Fellow will support the Office of Sustainability team on a variety of research and reporting efforts including a narrative for the campus climate change vulnerability assessment, renewable energy opportunities, carbon pricing, transportation, and other activities as needed.  Applicants with an interest in scientific research and writing on a variety of topic, and interest in sustainability systems application to planning, operations, and community engagement are encouraged to apply.  In addition to providing research and development support for comprehensive reports, the Technical Research Fellow will also work closely with Writing and Engagement student fellow in the Office to produce public resources and engagement tools such as news articles and short topical summaries.

The fellow will work 40 hours per week during the summer of 2016 (May-August). Pay ranges from $15-$18/hour depending on student level and ability. MIT student preferred, although open to non-MIT students. Duties will include:

The fellow will assist in the following areas:

  *   Public report on the climate modeling results of the campus climate vulnerability assessment
  *   Support for continued technical development writing around climate resiliency plans for the MIT campus
  *   Research and writing as needed on renewable energy investment opportunities
  *   Research and briefings on elements of climate action planning for the MIT campus, including but not limited to: carbon pricing, mitigation analysis, goal setting, and financial accounting
  *   Perform data collection and analysis;
  *   Conduct literature reviews and assessments of best practices and innovative technology & policy solutions;
  *   Draft, review, and present written, quantitative, and visual materials for MIT students, staff, and faculty groups

Qualifications

  *   Experience and/or strong interest in sustainability and climate-related issues as they relate to campus sustainability
  *   Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with meticulous attention to detail;
  *   Experience with technical report research and writing on cross-disciplinary topis related to sustainable development and environmental issues;
  *   Strong interest in sustainability and climate-related issues as they relate to urban and/or campus sustainability as well as a desire to impact the future of MIT;
  *   Strong quantitative data collection, management, and analysis, including proficiency in Excel;
  *   Excellent written, visual and oral communication skills, including presentation of complex data;
  *   Graduate student preferred, but will consider strong undergraduate candidates.

2. Writing and Engagement Fellow

MIT’s Office of Sustainability<http://sustainability.mit.edu/> (MITOS) is seeking a full-time summer Sustainability Fellow to develop dynamic materials that empower the MIT community to learn, interact, and take action on a broad range of important sustainability-related issues at MIT. The Fellow will influence MITOS projects with diverse writing and engagement needs. Project areas include: climate action engagement; campus mobility and commuting benefits education and outreach; living lab case study development; student engagement; and general communications and outreach strategy. This position requires a creative communicator who is passionate about social and environmental change as well as values the importance of using digital platforms for education and communication.

The fellow will work 40 hours per week during the summer of 2016 (May-August). Pay ranges from $15-$18/hour depending on student level and ability. MIT student preferred, although open to non-MIT students. Duties will include:

The fellow will assist in all aspects of the:

  *   Creation and management of strategic communications materials. This may include:
     *   Development of an inventory of case studies on MIT living lab projects;
     *   Assisting in the development of research reports and briefs in collaboration with MITOS staff and fellows;
     *   Development of impactful news stories;
     *   Development of creative outreach materials for new transportation programs, climate action planning, and internal Office communications.
  *   Support the development of a new interactive Office website:
     *   Development of web content;
     *   Strategy development;
     *   Reporting and analysis of web performance.
  *   Provide additional support to Office of Sustainability projects as needed.

Qualifications

  *   Experience and/or strong interest in sustainability and climate-related issues as they relate to campus sustainability
  *   Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with meticulous attention to detail
  *   Experience coordinating outreach programs with diverse groups of people
  *   Exposure to professional communications fields such as journalism, photography, videography, marketing, technical writing, etc.
  *   Proven experience in developing text and graphic content for effective communication materials including digital media (websites and social media), online and print (posters, infogrpahics, and reports)
  *   Strong Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media skills
  *   Familiarity with Drupal and Google Analytics preferred
  *   Multimedia experience a plus (i.e. video, audio)
  *   Strong interpersonal skills including an interest and ability to conduct face-to-face research interviews
  *   Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as needed
  *   Graduate student preferred, but will consider strong undergraduate candidates

3. Campus Sustainability Data and Metrics Fellow

MIT’s Office of Sustainability is seeking a student Sustainability Fellow to assist in researching, developing, analyzing and refining a suite of sustainability metrics and analytic tools to assist in the quantification, assessment, and communication of MIT’s current sustainability activities.  Data will be related to campus energy, water, waste, food, transportation, procurement, buildings, and more. The fellow will work 40 hours per week during the summer. Pay ranges from $15-$18/hour depending on student level and ability. MIT student preferred. Open to both upper-level undergraduate and graduate students.

  *   Develop a summary report of findings and conclusions

Qualifications:

An ideal candidate would have many of the following skills:

  *   Experience using data analysis programs; R or Python experience preferred
  *   Knowledge of statistics; experience with multivariate regression analysis or program evaluation preferred
  *   Experience developing graphics, dashboards or visualizations; Tableau preferred
  *   Prior experience analyzing energy data a plus
  *   Working knowledge of campus sustainability issues, systems, and practices
  *   Strong interpersonal skills including an interest and ability to conduct face-to-face research interviews
  *   Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as needed

4. Food Systems Fellow

The Sustainable Food Systems Fellow will work jointly with the MIT Office of Sustainability and Residential Life & Dining<http://studentlife.mit.edu/reslifeanddining> to support the development of a comprehensive analysis of the MIT food system and a set of recommendations for reshaping the way MIT impacts the environment and the health of the community through its food choices. The fellow will research the latest frameworks, trends, and advancements in sustainable food system development, while analyzing campus data, resources, and existing conditions.

The fellow will work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer of 2016 (May-August). Pay ranges from $15-$18/hour depending on student level and ability. As this is a collaboration with Residential Life & Dining, candidates with advanced background in food system analysis will be eligible to receive a full housing stipend to live on campus for the summer. Research will include but is not limited to:

  *   Assess current food systems at MIT, including an analysis of available data, existing resources (administrative and academic), and current contracts
  *   Provide an overview of the current food system, including a “map” of MIT’s internal resources
  *   Evaluate opportunities for new partnerships, programs, and frameworks
  *   Develop a set of recommendations for creating a more sustainable and healthy food systems on campus, including the procurement, production, consumption, and disposal of food

Basic Responsibilities

  *   Data collection and analysis
  *   Conduct literature reviews and assessments of best practices in sustainability food systems in addition to an analysis of current conditions and in person interviews
  *   Development of sustainable food system recommendations
  *   Draft, review, and present written, quantitative, and visual materials for MIT students, staff, and faculty group

  *   Strong interest and demonstrated experience in sustainability, food, and climate-related issues as they relate to urban and/or campus sustainability as well as a desire to impact the future of MIT
  *   Strong quantitative data collection, management, and analysis, including proficiency in Excel
  *   Excellent written, visual and oral communication skills, including presentation of complex data
  *   Graduate student preferred, but will consider strong undergraduate candidates
