Description: This fall, Systems Microbiology (20.106), will focus on contemporary issues in the microbiology of animal and human health, namely, the Microbiome in health and disease. In essence, this is an introductory microbiology course from a systems perspective - considering microbial diversity and the integration of data from a molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological context to understand the interaction of microbial organisms with their environment, particularly an animal/human host. Through a combination of lecture, problem sets, in class exercises, discussion, case studies, and presentation, the course will broadly consider research on the microbiome and subsequently delve into specific topics such as vaccination, antimicrobial drug resistance, toxicology, biodefense, microbial evolution, and emerging infectious diseases including influenza, tuberculosis, ebola, and plague.
