DID YOU KNOW?

Career Services drop-in hours are every Monday through Friday (except institute holidays) from 11am to 3pm.  Drop-ins are available to current MIT students and recent alumni (alumni who have graduated within the last 18 months). Drop-ins are 15-20 minute meetings with GECD staff members that don’t require an appointment.  We can help you with quick career-related questions and the critique of resumes, and cover letters.

MIT-Imperial Global Fellows Program Information Session

Join us for an information session on the 2015 MIT-Imperial Global Fellows
Program Dates: June 8-12, 2015
Location: Dover, MA

MIT and Imperial College London are jointly offering an intensive 5 day Global Fellows Program for PhD students. Through presentations, interactive work and hands-on activities, PhD students from Imperial (20) and MIT (20) will develop professional skills required to launch and manage a successful research career. Emphasis will be on creating and sustaining successful international research collaborations including:

•         Building successful working relationships and global collaborations

•         Team and project development

•         Global intercultural skills and communication

Participants will work in small groups with either an MIT or Imperial facilitator. Faculty members from each university will present on the topic of developing and managing international collaborations as an integral part of a research career.

2015 European Career Fair
Saturday, February 21, 9:00am-4:00pm
Johnson Athletic Center, Second Floor
The 19th European Career Fair will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2015  9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This event is open to college and university students and young professionals interested in working or studying in Europe.

Candidates attending the fair will have the opportunity to:
•         Submit their resumes online prior to the Fair for employers to review.
•         Network with over 100 European employers at the fair.
•         Attend company information sessions and events held February 21 - 23, 2015.
•         Interview with European employers (if selected) on February 22 or 23, 2015.

Students and young professionals are strongly encouraged to register for the European Career Fair in advance at http://ecf.fairsey.com<http://ecf.fairsey.com/>. Once registered, candidates will have access to more event details through the fair site and on-going email updates.

How to Talk to Strangers: Informational Interviewing to Grow Your Network
Monday, February 23, 3:00-4:00pm
Informational interviewing can be difficult when you are engaging with someone you don’t know. Through this workshop we will cover how to bridge the gap from unknown acquaintance to career connection. You will learn how to develop and implement an informational interviewing plan, about how to “make the ask” as well as tips on making an impression while staying true to who you are.

What Every International Student Should Know about US Employment
Tuesday, February 24, 1:00-2:30pm
A talk presented by Dan Beaudry, author of ‘Power Ties: The International Student’s Guide to Finding a Job in the United States’. Interested in hearing how H-1B sponsorship happens, and how to secure an H-1B visa from an organization that doesn’t sponsor H-1B visas? Negotiating Job Offers
Wednesday, February 25, 3:00-4:00pm
The Negotiating Job Offers workshop will examine the many variables that exist during the evaluation and negotiation process of Job Offers. Knowing how, when, and why you should negotiate will be reviewed. Salary vs. Total Compensation will be examined.  Strategies on the negotiation process will be discussed along with “Should You Negotiate?” and "What Can" and "What Can Not" be negotiated. These strategies can be used throughout your career. Effective Presentation Skills
Thursday, February 26, 2:00-3:30pm
Do you present your work to your lab, at conferences, or to a faculty or industry hiring committee?  If so, this workshop presented by Bob Dolan is designed to provide you with tips and strategies for delivering an effective presentation.  The more prepared you are, the more confident you will be.  Discussions will include room set-up, proper dress, room management, and actual professional delivery to your audience. LinkedIn Lab: Transforming a Passive Profile to an Active Networking Platform
Thursday, February 26, 3:00-4:00pm
Going beyond the basics of building a profile, this workshop will teach you how to transform a passive profile to an active networking platform. Among other things, you will learn how to build an online portfolio, methods to reach third and fourth degree connections, and how to engage effectively with contacts. This workshop is open to all students. It is recommended that participants create a LinkedIn profile beforehand and bring a laptop.
