Subject: cross-cultural collaboration course

For the second IAP in a row, our office is sponsoring a course called Cross-Cultural Collaboration. The class and the instructor received very positive feedback from last year’s students, and we think it is a valuable offering for undergrads, especially if they are taking another team-intensive class during IAP or have an interest in international careers or collaborative research.

Cross-Cultural Collaboration – IAP 2016
21W.S60 3 Units
Section I: Jan. 5,7,12,14,19 and 21 8AM – 9:30AM
Section II: Jan. 5,7,12,14,19 and 21 10AM – 11:30AM
Section III: Jan. 6,8,11,13,15 and 20 9AM—10:30AM
Each class will include approx. 20 students from SUTD and 10 MIT students. This course is especially good when combined with another teamwork-oriented IAP class, although this is not a requirement for participation.
It is a rare job or class that does not require working with others. Today's engineers, designers, programmers and architects need to be experts in the skills of their trade, but they also need the skills to work with others to get things done. As work becomes increasingly global in nature, this means communicating effectively with people from across many cultures, identifying and overcoming sources of tension, and creatively combining the strengths that individual team members bring to the table. In this course, participants will:
· Gain knowledge of cultural factors that may influence group and individual work dynamics
· Understand typical stages of group development
· Gain tools for effective communication
· Assess their own areas of strength and weakness and identify areas of growth to work on during the class
· Explore various paradigms of leadership and analyze them through different cultural lenses
· Gain experience working in teams
Preregistration starts Dec. 1 for credit. If you’d like to take the course as a non-credit activity, contact jconnor at mit.edu<mailto:jconnor at mit.edu> or jessed at mit.edu<mailto:jessed at mit.edu> to sign up.
