Careers in Health Data Science
April 23, 2015
3:30-4:30 pm
Rm 3-333
Speaker: Dr. Kathy Copic, Insight Health Data Science Fellowship Program
Pre-registration appreciated: https://www.myinterfase.com/mit/student, under Events
Dr. Kathy Copic will describe the health data science landscape, and will give advice for those interested in transitioning to industry. Scientists and engineers with research experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, physics, math, engineering, and other quantitative fields are playing key roles in transforming the way companies and nonprofits work with data to impact our daily lives.
There is an unprecedented amount of data across the health and life sciences sector. This information is a form of “big data” not only for the sheer size but also its complexity, diversity, and time-dependence. Health data scientists analyze this data to find more effective treatments for a given disease, increase quality of life using personalized lifestyle recommendations, discover new types of cancer treatments, provide realtime health information to doctors or families, and link environmental factors to disease and corresponding treatment options.
Kathy Copic earned her Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Michigan, did a post-doc at Columbia, and was a Staff Scientist at Berkeley National Lab. Now Director for New Initiatives and Growth at Insight Data Science, Kathy helps scientists transition from academia into new careers in industry. She will share her experience with the Insight Health Data Science Fellowship Program, which provides an intensive seven-week postdoctoral training fellowship designed to bridge the gap between academia and a career in industry. Data Scientists from the Broad Institute, Optum Labs, Novartis, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Biogen Idec will be working with Fellows in Boston and hiring from the program.
