Investigating genes related to autism-spectrum disorders using zebrafish

In the Sive lab, we are interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. A current area of work in the lab is investigating the function of a specific gene associated with multiple neurodevelopmental disorders. To further understand how this gene is involved in brain development, we have recently generated a knockout zebrafish line. We are looking for 1-2 undergraduates to work closely with a postdoc to investigate the gene function and characterize this mutant zebrafish line. Specifically, these projects will initially involve 1) assessing normal mRNA expression patterns of this gene and 2) measuring mRNA levels of associated target genes in the mutant line. This project will involve a number of molecular biology techniques to characterize this zebrafish line. Long-term, we hope these projects will enable us to obtain additional insights into autism spectrum disorders and inform therapeutic development. This lab experience will introduce and build upon the basic research skills needed for a student seeking a future in the biomedical sciences, including laboratory research, clinical research, and medical fields. We would prefer to work with students who are interested in a long-term research experience and continuing in lab full-time this summer.

Tasks and responsibilities:
*Reading scientific papers, developing experimental design skills
*Basic laboratory techniques (e.g. making solutions, pipetting)
*Keeping detailed lab notebook
*In situ hybridization and molecular cloning
*qPCR and gel electrophoresis
*Data analysis and statistics
*Presentation skills
*Zebrafish husbandry
