> Background – NSBRI
> The National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI), funded by NASA, leads a science and technology program to develop countermeasures, or solutions, to the health-related problems and physical and psychological challenges men and women face on long-duration spaceflights. The research results and medical technologies developed have impact for similar conditions experienced on Earth, such as osteoporosis, muscle wasting, shift-related sleep disturbances, balance disorders, and cardiovascular and immune system problems. To prepare the next generation of space life scientists, NSBRI offers a robust education and outreach program encompassing a variety of activities from curriculum and teacher professional development to summer internships, undergraduate and graduate education, and postdoctoral fellowships.
> Summer Internship Experience at One of NASA’s Research Centers
> NSBRI’s summer program provides the opportunity for undergraduate, graduate, veterinary or medical students from across the country to join ongoing project activities and gain hands-on experience in space biomedical research at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX, Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH or Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, CA. Typical intern majors include aerospace/astronautics, biomedical engineering, chemistry, counseling, exercise physiology, mechanical engineering, food science, genetics, mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, neuroscience, nutrition, physics, psychology, space studies, systems biology engineering, and veterinary. Since 1998, 174 students representing over 80 colleges and universities have participated in the 10-week program. Interns receive a stipend of $6600 that does not cover housing or travel.
> Eligibility
> Applicants must have completed at least their sophomore year of college by the start of the summer internship program. The program is open to U.S. citizens. Applicants must be available during the dates May 27 through August 2, 2013.
