Dear Educator

I am writing for your assistance in recruiting student applicants for a Boston-area research program known as CURE (Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences). CURE introduces college undergraduates from underrepresented populations to the world of cancer research by placing them in real research settings for a summer, which may be extended to a 2-year experience.

CURE is a program of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC), a National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer center. The CURE program is designed to increase the number of underrepresented students engaged in basic, clinical and population-based biomedical cancer research. Over the past 10 years, 2002 students have participated in the DF/HCC CURE program and 87% of those students are now enrolled in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) program or are working in a STEM-related industry.

As part of the CURE program, students will be mentored in a cancer research environment, where they will have a hands-on research experience not found in any classroom. They will work alongside scientists and researchers, using state-of-the-art technology. They will learn what a career in cancer research involves. Additionally, the cancer center will provide a stipend, offer ongoing educational seminars and networking opportunities, and ensure close supervision.

The deadline for application to the 2012 program is February 21, 2012. Visit our website (www.cancerdisparities.com<file://www.cancerdisparities.com>) and select “ For Students” to find more details on the program and to download an application.

I would also welcome an opportunity to speak with your students to provide more information about the program and its benefits. Please contact me if you would like to schedule a presentation on the program.

And please share this email with anyone whom you think appropriate. I have attached an informational sheet for your distribution and posting.

Sincerely,

Karen Burns White
