*Research Associate position in the lab of: *

Dr. Scott Kitchen

Assistant Professor, David Geffen School of Medicine

UCLA AIDS Institute

Director, UCLA Mouse/Human Chimera Core

*Staff Research Associate I*

*Job Duties:*

Process blood samples; perform tissue culture; perform large-scale selection
of different populations of cells; grow and purify viral vectors and live
virus; assist in animal work; maintain laboratory notebook. Maintain
different cell lines; process patient samples; calculate and analyze data.
Will plan experiments in conjunction with supervisor but also must be able
to interpret data and plan experiments independently. Will also work
closely with other technicians in conducting large-scale experiments.
Order, stock, and maintain inventory on laboratory supplies. Assist with
the handling of mice as needed.

*Job Qualifications:*

This position is ideal for a highly motivated individual with good
communication skills and attention to detail. B.S. in Biology required, as
well as ability to perform a given protocol with meticulous precision and in
a reproducible way with minimal supervision. Working knowledge of and
experience with molecular biology, immunology, and tissue culture a plus, as
well as experience with BSL2+ practices and animal work, but will train.

*Research Interests:*

Dr. Kitchen’s research interests focus on investigating the effects of viral
infection, as well as other cellular abnormalities, on human hematopoiesis
and on exploring ways to correct defects that exist in immunity to these
antigens. The human immune system is normally fastidious in controlling the
environmental assaults that the body receives every day. However, there are
many instances where the immune response is ineffective in clearing
infection or cancerous cells. We are interested in understanding the
mechanisms that limit the immune system’s ability to clear infection or
cancer and in developing ways to augment these responses. In these studies,
we are investigating the role of the CD4 molecule in multilineage
hematopoiesis and in cellular responses, particularly in the context of HIV
infection. We are also interested in developing gene therapy-based
approaches to engineer human hematopoietic stem cells to reconstitute and/or
enhance immune responses following their development into mature cells that
specifically target HIV infection as well as other viral and cellular
antigens. In addition, we are interested in the development of mouse/human
chimeric models that allow the characterization of human hematopoiesis and
engineered immunity in a surrogate host *in vivo*.
