An honest and emotionally compelling hour-long documentary, the
award-winning *Naturally Obsessed: The Making of a
Scientist*<http://track.emarketingtherapy.com/c/1/baf951366dd4f8674dad21e7a627d9db19fe00676b55e940>,
helps students to understand the life of the scientist and to stimulate
questions about the career choices that are ahead of them. As one audience
member described the film, it gives “*a powerful sense of the beauty and
reality of doing science – with a Hollywood ending*.”
*Rob* took a postdoc on the way to a career in academia *Kil* became a
consultant to the biotech and pharmaceutical industries *Gabe* left the PhD
program for a good job at a biotechnology company

*Naturally Obsessed Spotlight on Students **
*

*
**Matthew Engle* is a Fourth Year Graduate Student at SUNY Stony Brook in
Stony Brook, New York. He is interested in pursuing a career in technology
commercialization.

In February 2009, he teamed up with the Center for Inclusive Education and
the Graduate School Organization to present a screening of *Naturally
Obsessed*.

*Why did you decide to plan a screening** for your school?*

I thought it was a truly accurate portrayal of graduate school for
scientists and that many of the challenges the characters faced were similar
to my own. I wanted to share this movie with all the other students at my
university working in science. We had over 100 attendees from the faculty,
undergraduate, and graduate schools. The graduate students represented many
departments ranging from biochemistry to ecology and evolution to the marine
sciences.

*What were some of the highlights? ***

The event was able to touch students and faculty simultaneously, and gave
both parties an important perspective into what mentor or student life may
be like. Faculty have had the opportunity of being students, and
through *Naturally
Obsessed* they can remember what it's like transforming into a professional.
Alternatively, the film also gives students insight into what it takes to
manage a top lab with several brilliant graduate students. We also got some
thoughtful responses from the audience about the state of science funding
and education. Finally, it provided everybody with some much needed stress
relief!
