It is time to renew your MIT certificates - your personal certificate
expires July 30, but can be renewed now and will remain valid to July
30 2007. As you know, your certificates are the mechanism through
which you can access MIT web pages and services such as Benefits,
SAPweb, WebSIS, and other restricted web content.
This year the MIT CA (certificate authority) certificate must be
renewed as well. The new MIT CA certificate will be valid through
8/1/2026, so this is an infrequent renewal as you can see.
Some specific instructions and pointers to useful web pages are
below. Please email biocomp if you need further assistance.
Regards,

Renewing your MIT Certificates:
links for certificates are here:
http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/certificates/
If you use Safari (Mac), see the instructions here:
http://itinfo.mit.edu/article.php?id=7145
Note: depending upon your OS version and Safari version, the
screenshots on this page might look a little different than your
actual Keychain window. That's fine, following the directions will
still work correctly.
Glitch: Note instruction #7, which says when you view the certificate
it should say "This certificate is valid". Once the certificate is
installed, view it by choosing "Certificates" in the left-hand window
under Category. In the right-hand window you should see your personal
certificate and the MIT Certification Authority certificate. Double
click the MIT CA authority. In the window which appears, if it says
"This certificate is not in the trusted root database", do this:
o hide the details,
o then click on trust settings arrow to bring down options.
o On the very first one, "when using this certificate", choose
always trust. "Always trust" will appear within each menu.
o Quit the Keychain and then relaunch it, and the certificate will
now say "This certificate is valid".
Windows users: to avoid confusion about choosing which is the
correct, current, certificate in IE, remove your old certificate
before installing the new one. Instructions here: http://web.mit.edu/
ist/topics/certificates/delete.html.
Don't forget that you must renew your certificates for EVERY browser
on EVERY computer you use (except in the case of Athena machines,
where your certificates are stored in your personal Athena locker and
thus available to you on any Athena workstation.)
Recommended browsers at MIT:

Note: although Firefox is not listed as a recommended browser this
year, it is supported by IS&T as an alternate browser. See the
website: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ to download the most current
version. Firefox also now automatically updates itself to get latest
security patches and other fixes/improvements.
