Biography:
Tadataka (Tachi) Yamada assumed the role of 
Chairman, Research & Development, 
Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline in January 2001. 
He is a member of the Corporate Executive Team 
and the Board of GlaxoSmithKline plc. He became 
Chairman, Research and Development, 
Pharmaceuticals, SmithKline Beecham, in February 
1999.

Previously, Tachi was President, SmithKline 
Beecham Healthcare Services, taking that post in 
February 1996. He joined SmithKline Beecham as a 
Non-executive member of the Board of Directors in 
February 1994.

He was formerly Chairman of the Department of 
Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan 
Medical School and Physician-in-Chief of the 
University of Michigan Medical Center.

Tachi is a Councillor of the Association of 
American Physicians, past President of the 
American Gastroenterological Association, Master 
of the American College of Physicians and a 
member of the Institute of Medicine of the 
National Academy of Sciences. He has been a 
member of the Board of Directors of the American 
Board of Internal Medicine and a member at large 
of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He 
was a member of the Board of Directors of 
diaDexus Inc until December 2004 and is a Trustee 
of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
