Internship Opportunity: Looking for Experience as a Science Writer?
The Jackson Laboratory (TJL) is expanding the renowned Summer Student
Program to include an opportunity in science writing. This nine- to
eleven-week position is ideal for a science major considering a
transition to science writing. The intern will have the opportunity
to work with experienced writers in Scientific Program Development
(SPD), the office responsible for a wide range of scientific writing
and editing projects connected with TJL's research, resources and
education programs. The SPD staff includes two Ph.D. scientists with
broad research experience and scientific writing expertise, a former
science journalist, and an information specialist.
Candidates majoring in biology or chemistry with a minor in English
are preferred.
The science writing intern will have an opportunity to focus on one
or more research areas at TJL, obtaining experience in explaining
complex research projects to the general public. He or she will also
interview and interact with peers in the Summer Student Program, with
whom he or she will share residence and dining facilities. The
intern will meet several world-class science journalists at the
annual Press Week held at The Jackson Laboratory in conjunction with
The Johns Hopkins University.
The position offers a stipend of $2,500 plus room and board.
