Dear planetary community,
We are pleased to announce that our next MIT Planetary Lunch Seminar will be given by ZhenLiang Tian, Southern University of Science and Technology.
ZhenLiang received his Ph.D. in EAPS in 2017, working with Jack Wisdom — his research interests vary from planetary dynamo and magnetic field generation, to orbital evolution and thermal evolution of planetary bodies.
ZhenLiang will be visiting MIT for the entire week so please reach out to him directly (Cc’d above) if you would like to set up a time to meet with him.
Cheers,
Jason Soderblom & the PLS planning committee
Date: Tuesday October 28th
Time: 12:30 — 1:30 (arrive a few minutes early to serve lunch)
Title: Lunar Theory: from Naval Practice to Perturbation Theory
Abstract: The problem of determining one's longitude at sea was a challenge to Columbus as well as the British Navy. Longitude can be determined if the Moon's motion is known. However, mismatchs between theory and the actual motion perplexed Newton, and even led Clairaut to doubt the inverse-square gravitational law. Euler developed new mathematical tools, and then lunar tables fit for navigation became available in 1766. A brief introduction will be given on how the lunar theory can be developed in a modern mechanics context.
