Planetesimal evolution: Collisions, differentiation, and magnetic field generation
Abstract: Planetesimals, typically hundreds to thousands of kilometers in size, are the fundamental building blocks of planets. Understanding their evolution is crucial for interpreting meteorite records and for elucidating the processes of planet formation. Most previous models considered planetesimals as isolated objects, overlooking the role of their mutual collisions. In this talk, I will present my recent work on planetesimal differentiation and magnetic field generation, using them to illustrate the potential effects of collisions on planetesimal evolution. Looking ahead, I will discuss how collisions may be key to resolving long-standing questions regarding iron meteorite compositions and volatile depletions in planetary bodies.
