We are excited to announce that MIT’s spring Planetary Lunch Seminar kicks off tomorrow!

Speaker: Belén Yu Irureta-Goyena Chang (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland / Caltech Infrared Processing and Analysis Center)
Date: Tuesday Feb 6th
Time: 12:30 PM (as always, please arrive a few minuets early to get lunch)
Location: 54-517 & Zoom (link below)

Belén Yu will be around Cambridge thought Friday so rather than putting meetings on one day, we ask that you email her directly at belen at ipac.caltech.edu<mailto:belen at ipac.caltech.edu> to set up a time to meet. She is also interested in exoplanets so we encourage our exoplanet colleagues to schedule times to meet with her.

Title: A New Look on Asteroid Detection in Wide-Field Surveys

Abstract: The Zwicky Transient Facility, with its extremely large field of view (47 square degrees), has been used to discover more than 200 near-Earth asteroids and comets. This seminar explores new methods to improve the current pipeline and enhance the recovery rate. In particular, it delves into the application of a machine-learning algorithm trained on both past detections and simulated asteroid data. The expectation is that the developed tools will also be applicable to Euclid, VST and a range of other satellite and ground-based surveys, setting the stage for fast and automated asteroid detection in the upcoming generation of telescopes.

Cheers,
Jason and the PLS Organizing Committee
