Hello everyone,

I have the pleasure to announce that the next Planetary Lunch Seminar on April 16th will feature Katarina Miljkovic, visiting us all the way from Curtin University in Australia. Katarina will be sharing her work on understanding impacts and seismology on Mars. Join us at 12:30 PM on 4/16 in 54-517 or on Zoom<https://mit.zoom.us/j/93069069393>. Lunch will be provided, and we encourage you to arrive a few minutes early to get food.

Katarina will also be on campus all day on Tuesday (and some parts of Monday, though it's a holiday);

We highly recommend you sign up to meet with her here<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Cd_vuoxXHAFBOGVmCgT338wUv9IHQ9MjqsDFU7zYgsk/edit?usp=sharing>.

Best,
Isaac Narrett and the PLS Organizing Committee

Title: Interior structure of Mars inferred from impact cratering and lessons learnt from the NASA InSight mission

Abstract:
NASA’s InSight mission operated on Mars from 2018 until the end of 2022 and has documented over 1200 seismic shakes and quakes. Seismic shakes that originated from small meter-sized fresh cratering events allowed us to infer the structure of the top crust on Mars. The InSight’s seismic survey and interior mapping, followed by the crustal structure and thermal evolution modelling made in the last few years, allowed for a better understanding of the ancient impact bombardment on Mars that formed the largest craters on the planet. This seminar will focus on numerical impact modelling of both small and large impact bombardment on Mars, including how numerical modelling assists in placing constraints on the interior structure of early Mars via impact basins and estimates the location of ice layers in the shallow crust via the largest fresh ice-exposing crater ever discovered. It reviews some of the impacts-related science delivered during and after the NASA InSight science operations.
