> “Lunar Impact Basins: from GRAIL to Impact Simulations”

> Global high-resolution GRAIL-derived crustal thickness map of the Moon has revealed more large impact basins on the near side hemisphere than on its far side. This adds to the previous knowledge that the Moon displays major geological differences between the near and far side hemispheres. Recently acquired high resolution gravity and topography from NASA’s GRAIL and LRO missions are providing us with greatly improved information about the structure of lunar impact basins, allowing for a detailed comparison with numerical impact models. Impact simulations show that lateral (and temporal) variations in target properties had created the asymmetry in observed basin morphologies. This further implies that the magnitude of the late heavy bombardment derived from the lunar crater record could have been overestimated.

> About speaker: Katarina is currently a postdoc at IPGP in Paris, working with Mark Wieczorek on the Moon and GRAIL-related topics. She spent one year as a postdoc at Imperial College London, working with Gareth Collins on numerical impact modeling. Before that, she got her PhD at the Open University in UK (studying impact cratering and dust clouds around Galilean moons with Prof. John Zarnecki and Prof. Nigel Mason) and a bachelor in Astrophysics at the University of Belgrade, in Serbia. She does theoretical, experimental and applied impact physics.
