Planetary folks,
Sorry for the late notice, but I am giving a talk today on radar evidence for water ice at the lunar poles. Given the impending 3-day weekend, however, I suspect many of you have already skipped town.
Here are the details:
Friday, April 12
Lane Hall, Room 7
Tufts University
Refreshments at 3:30 PM
Talk begins at 4:00 PM
Title: Exploring for water on the Lunar Surface
Abstract: Although humans last set foot on the Moon in 1972, new discoveries in lunar science continue to be made. Observations of new remote sensing data from orbital spacecraft indicate small amounts of previously unknown water on the lunar surface. The NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft, in orbit around the Moon since 2009, has a radar instrument (Mini-RF) onboard that can peer into permanently shadowed craters near the lunar poles. Mini-RF radar images are consistent with the presence of small amount of ice in certain shadowed craters. These reservoirs of water ice are a potential resource for both future science and exploration.
Cheers,
Brad
