"Deformable Mirrors for Wavefront Control"

Thomas Bifano
Director, Boston University Photonics Center
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Boston University

DATE: Wednesday, October 17
TIME: 4-5pm
PLACE: 33-116

ABSTRACT:
High resolution astronomical telescopes on the ground and in space
rely on precise optical wavefront control to produce sharp images. In
most modern instruments, real-time adaptive optical control of
wavefront using deformable mirrors has become indispensable for
compensating refractive disturbances in the beam path or shape errors
in the optics themselves. I present the results of a decade-long
engineering and science program at Boston University to model, design,
make, and use silicon micro-electro-mechanical deformable mirrors
(MEMS-DMs) in astronomical instruments.
