Title:  New Horizons: Exploring the Solar System's Third Zone

New Horizons, launched in January 2006, is en route to a 2015 flyby of
the Pluto system and subsequent flybys of small Kuiper Belt Objects in
2017-2021. New Horizons (http://www.pluto.jhuapl.edu) carries the most
sophisticated suite of remote sensing and in situ instruments ever
launched on the first reconnaissance of a planet. I will describe this
mission, beginning with the motivations that caused it to rise to the
top of the most recent Planetary Science Decadal Survey. I will then
continue by describing it's scientific capabilities, its progress in
flight so far, its Jupiter flyby results, and plans for the 2015 Pluto
system encounter.
