Urgent Changes to Dormspam
Dear Student Group Leaders,
We are writing to notify you of changes coming imminently to dormspam. Notably, these changes will make dormspam entirely opt-in, requiring all students, not just incoming years, to add themselves before receiving any communications. Additionally, non-students and alumni will not be allowed on dormspam to any degree. Be aware of these changes as you go about advertising events. Also, as a reminder, ASA postering spaces are still available for club advertisement, please check out our postering guidelines for more information: https://asa.mit.edu/advertisingpublicity/public-advertising-space
We want to emphasize that the ASA played no part in developing these changes and was given no direct notice, even considering these policies are being enacted today, and will impact all student groups on campus. Contact your dorm leaders for more information.
Although these new policies may hinder advertising, we urge you to please avoid workarounds when communicating on behalf of your organizations. You should avoid using departmental mailing lists, as those contain large groups of students and are mostly unmoderated.
*
Dormspam worked on a collaborative framework, relying on students to follow established guidelines to make inbox management possible and avoid polluting inboxes. Any workarounds will lie outside these norms will negatively affect us all and will only work against the changes we are trying to prevent.
We’re working on meeting with members of admin to talk about these new policies and how they will impact groups on campus, since these decisions have been made absent student leaders so far. We’ve created a feedback form <https://cglink.me/2cy/s668> which we encourage you to use to share both your personal opinions and the anticipated impact of the changes on your group’s activities. The more feedback we receive from groups, the more agency we have to propose alternative solutions or to push back on these changes in our upcoming meetings with administration. Any group or individual feedback that is provided at this link will be discussed with admin anonymously unless there is explicit permission to deanonymize it.
