-------------
Sunday was the last day of APAHM (Asian Pacific American Heritage Month),
and the fifth day following the murder of George Floyd. Tou Thao, an Asian
police officer who was filmed keeping bystanders away from the scene of the
murder, and who has a record of using excessive force, has still not been
charged. These are facts, and they are true, and yet they come nowhere near
capturing the depth and intricacy behind the issue.
Asian Americans have always held a precarious position in the space of
“POC”. We have been harassed and discriminated against, while continuing to
be propped up as the “Model Minority” time and time again, and yet too
often we are silent when it matters. In doing so, we are complicit in the
racism that pervades America. Non-Black people of color do not know what it
is like to be Black in America, and we should neither pretend we do, nor
should we ignore the problem. We must do better at combatting anti-black
racism, not just today, not just as a tit-for-tat payback for support when
we face racism against Asian Americans, but because it’s the right thing to
do. There are things that you can do right now, as many have been doing.
Donate to bail relief funds (linked below) if you are able. Sign petitions
calling for arrests, and meaningful change. Continue to uplift Black
voices. But there are also things that we can and should have been doing
continuously.
We acknowledge that as an organization, AAA has historically been
relatively apolitical, speaking up on the occasion that an issue directly
affects Asian Americans, and keeping silent otherwise. We will do better,
and we ask that you do too. We have linked lists and resources (pick one
and start from there!) to help educate ourselves. We ask that you stay
active in advocacy, not just in this present moment when it’s socially
acceptable. Support concrete policies that combat racism, like investing in
violence prevention instead of policing (reclaimtheblock.org

Call your congresspeople, demand change. We ask that you continue to be
conscious of your own privilege in the world today — whether this means NOT
calling the cops, thinking of algorithmic bias in your software engineering
job, calling out your friends who use slurs casually, or actively striving
to be better every single day, is up to you. We stand with the Black
community and we hope you do too.

We also encourage our members to attend MIT CSC's discussion roundtable
this Thursday, June 4th at 8-9pm. More information, resources, and a link
to join, from CSC:
*We will also be holding a discussion roundtable this Thursday (6/04) at
8-9 PM ET to discuss recent events through a lens of our Chinese American
identities. Advocacy takes on many forms. People come in at many different
levels. We do not expect you to be experts on this topic, the truth is that
many of us have been shielded from having discussions like these, and
that’s okay. Just come in willing to learn. That is all we ask. Join here
<https://mit.zoom.us/j/91249754943>. *
*If you would like to learn more, this link
<https://frama.link/asians4blacklives> and this one
<https://elina-yu.github.io/resources/> are great places to start.
Anti-blackness has plagued American communities throughout its history. The
Asian community is no exception. We ask that our students start
conversations with their Asian friends and family, however hard, and begin
the process of learning together. Here
<https://lettersforblacklives.com/about-the-letter-ed27ea67eb2e> is a
project started by Asian Americans and Asian Canadians to help us start
talking to our families about Black Lives Matter. The project links letters
in many different Asian languages.*
