The Public Service Center would like to remind you that we have multiple exciting opportunities throughout the year as well as program application deadlines. Our opportunities are for undergraduates and graduates and in some cases staff are able to participate. Davis Projects for Peace deadline
Deadline to apply: noon, Thursday, Feb 2, 2012
Develop a proposal for a Davis Projects for Peace $10,000 fellowship!
Davis Projects for Peace typically offers a $10,000 fellowship for an MIT undergraduate student project that promotes peace, to be implemented in the summer. The aim is to "help young people launch some immediate initiatives that could bring new thinking to the prospects for peace in the world." MIT will select several compelling proposals to send forward, and at least one is guaranteed to be funded! Think creatively, innovatively, and entrepreneurially - this is a chance to formulate and test ideas for peace. The award will be made to an MIT undergraduate, but the undergraduate may use the funds to also support team members as appropriate.
Application requirements:
* A detailed two-page, single-spaced proposal (who, what, when, where, how, anticipated outcomes and prospects for future impact) that includes confirmation of the participation of any partner organizations or people
* A detailed one-page budget for carrying out the project in summer 2012
* The proposal heading must include the following: name of the participating institution, name of all student participants, title of project, country where the project will be performed

FSILG&D Community Service Challenge team registration deadline
As unique MIT communities, each fraternity, sorority, independent living group and dorm (FSILG&D) is challenged to unite around community service. Every chapter or residential community is encouraged to collectively track their community service efforts between February 15 and April 15, 2012 so that a shared ethic of service can be promoted and celebrated. At the end of this period, teams will report accomplishments to the MIT Public Service Center. Service achievements will be publically recognized and one team will be awarded the Service Cup. ReachOut: Help Teach a Child to Read - application deadline
ReachOut is a literacy program that matches MIT students with children at a local after school center for tutoring twice a week. Students may participate in ReachOut as volunteers or receive a paid position through Community Service Work-Study. FUP Counselor application deadline
The Freshman Urban Program (FUP) is a service-focused, community-exploring program aimed at introducing freshmen to MIT and to life in an urban college environment. Participants have the opportunity to get to know each other and their counselors through fun and focused public service activities. Besides acclimating incoming students to their new environment, FUP enables them to explore and begin to understand the needs of the Cambridge/Boston communities, and the role that students can play in meeting these needs through leadership and service. FSILG&D Service Challenge - Alternative Spring Break grant application deadline

IDEAS Global Challenge Dinner

This is your chance to learn about the annual IDEAS Global Challenge, share your project ideas and skills, and meet potential team members. All types of projects, including for-profit ventures, are encouraged as long as they address the needs of an under-served community. It's a fun, casual environment where great projects are born. Come with a project in mind - or come looking to join a team. Participants will also have 60 seconds to pitch their projects and skills to the audience - make them professional, practiced, and to the point.
