SUMMER INTERNSHIP FOR WOMEN:
I am pleased to announce that APS and IBM will again co-sponsor a
research internship program for undergraduate women in physics and
related fields in the summer of 2009. We ask your assistance in
sharing this information with young women students in your
departments who may be interested in this excellent opportunity.
The internships are salaried positions typically 10 weeks long, and
include in addition a $2,500 grant, plus the opportunity to work
with a mentor at one of three IBM research locations. Applications
must be submitted by February 15, 2009 using the web-based format.
Please note that letters of recommendation should be emailed directly
to IBM. Complete details on the program and how to apply are available
at http://www.aps.org/programs/women/scholarships/index.cfm [www.aps.org]
Questions about the program itself should be sent to me at
bajones at almaden.ibm.com.

University
The Materials Research Center at Northwestern University offers a
9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. The
students are paired up with some of the leading research professors
in science and engineering fields. Research areas include
nanoparticles, molecular electronics, ceramics, polymers, gels,
nanocomposites, plasmonics and biomaterials. Students currently
pursuing an undergraduate degree in science or engineering who are US
citizens or permanent residents are eligible. The program dates for
the summer of 2009 are June 22 to August 21. Participants are paid
$4000 stipend plus on-campus housing. For more information, please

REU AT DELAWARE (MARINE SCIENCE):
Please pass on the following information to your students
about a great undergraduate summer research opportunity at the
College of Marine and Earth Studies, University of Delaware.
Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation's
Division of Ocean Sciences, this REU (Research Experience for
Undergraduates) program supports ten undergraduate students to
conduct research in marine science. We especially encourage
applications from members of minority groups underrepresented
in science.
The program will run for 10 weeks (June 2 - August 8). Please
go to our website
http://www.ocean.udel.edu/academics/undergraduate/summer/index.shtml
[www.ocean.udel.edu]) to find out more about the program.
Student support includes a $3,300 stipend, dormitory fee,
tuition for the one-credit course, and travel assistance. The
application form and instructions are available at
https://www.ocean.udel.edu/academics/undergraduate/summer/summerInternApplication.aspx
Interns will work with faculty and research staff in a graduate
student atmosphere on a research topic in chemical, physical,
or biological oceanography, marine biology, or marine geology.
This internship program will take place at the University of
Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in the resort community of
Lewes, located on the shores of the Delaware Bay and Atlantic
Ocean near Cape Henlopen State Park.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (302) 645-4275
or at adittel at udel.edu.
