"...the Marie Curie Initial Training Network. The have one for particle
detectors (MC-PAD, http://mc-pad.web.cern.ch/mc-pad/) that is *extremely*
well-funded. It's designed for European students to do their PhD (3 years
long), so Americans coming out of undergrad have a somewhat ambiguous status
but right now it seems I go for a MSc. It pays about 33000 euros/year, adjusted
for the country you are placed in, with a pretty generous travel stipend
depending on how far you move from home. Also the network is very focused on
training a young scientist to be both a researcher and a networker, so every
site that is a member of the network is paired with an industrial partner. The
interns are shipped back and forth from these partners, so you can get a feel
for what a close collaboration is like. Naturally, travel is paid for. There is
also separate funding for any kind of training you might need - classes,
materials, conferences, etc. It's a great deal for the universities in the
network because they get students for free (the money comes from the EU) and it
seems like it will be a great deal for the students because we convene at CERN
every few months, are provided with generous amounts of training and career
development, and are introduced to a significant network of labs and
scientists."
