Also, let me be clear that I am sending this as an individual member of USITT.<br><div><br></div><div>I would ask each of you to consider signing the petition below to put the name of Don Childs on the ballot for the office of Vice-President for Members, Sections and Chapters.</div><div><br></div><div>I have known Don for more than 35 years and I believe he deserves the opportunity to have his name put before the full membership of USITT in this election. While I also believe that, if elected, he would make a tremendous contribution to the organization, at the moment the issue is Don being on the ballot. </div><div><br></div><div>Some of you may already know Don (he was at KCACTF-New England last January), but for those of you who do not, I would ask you to take a look at his bio and position statement below.</div><div><br></div><div>Having represented our section on the nominations committee for the last three years (and having now completed my term), I have always supported giving the full membership the greatest opportunity for determining their own leadership. Don returned to college where he obtained a BA from the University of Iowa and an MFA from Indiana University. A teaching career has taken Don from San Diego to Montreal and many places in between. Don was a charter member of the Northern California Section of USITT and founding Chair of The St. Lawrence Section (which went inactive when CITT developed). Don served USITT as a Director at Large in 1982-1983. Because of a family health issues Don took a 10 year hiatus from theatre and USITT, but since his return in 2003 he has been very active both in the Southwest Section and nationally - both as a presenter and as a volunteer. As chair of SWUSITT Don has built the membership from 40 plus to 170 plus and increased student membership from 17 to nearly 100. Don sponsored an exhibit and tribute to Ladislav Vychodil at the USITT Phoenix Conference in 2007. Don chaired the 2006 Texas Educational Theatre Association (TETA) Designfest and was TETA Artist of the Year in 2007. Don left the world of traditional academia to concentrate on the consulting and designing areas of his career. He recently founded the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas to train designers and technicians for the ‘high-tech’ world of entertainment technology which has its center in Las Vegas. At the last conference the student membership exceed 100 (up from approximately 10 when I made my pledge). Additionally the entries in the design exhibition were 68, up from 7 when I made my pledge. The value of the prizes award at the 2011 Symposium exceeded $12,000. As VP of Members, Sections, and Chapters I will visit all Sections and Chapters. I will assist them in building membership and developing programs or exhibits as they desire. I will also assist them in developing a program to raise funds and or in kind donations. I will work to improve communication and liaison between the Sections/Chapters and National. I will have at least 2 conference call meetings with section and chapter heads each year. I will also work aggressively to increase both college and high school student chapters in each region.
