We have reached the unfortunate time when security has become a very serious concern on campuses and in places of worship nationwide. What makes this conversation very difficult for us is that
here in W11 we straddle both worlds. We are a community of communities focused on religious, spiritual, and ethical understandings in the heart of one of the world’s premier educational institutions. As much pride as we take in that identity, it may also
allow us to be seen as a target for those with malintent. The open campus model that makes MIT a strong community partner in Cambridge, may in this case need to be weighed against the safety and care of all of those that call W11 home.

The tragedy in New Zealand has pushed us to move more quickly in our discussions and implementation of safety measures for W11. Over the past ten days, MIT Police have temporarily increased
their patrols in and around our building. In the meantime, I have had conversations with our Chief of Police, and representatives of the DSL leadership and space usage and planning team, as well as representatives of some of W11’s many stakeholder groups.
In each of these conversations, the key take-away has been the same—that we must temporarily and immediately move toward a security solution that includes full-time MIT ID access while we are thoroughly evaluating our longer-term
solutions. We will work with specific religious communities that cannot use ID access during specific times of religious observance in order to ensure that they will be able to access the building during those times.

While we are undergoing the process of evaluating our building security needs, the ORSEL Spaces Working Group, which currently consists of Dean Gustavo Burkett, Michael Foley, Adam Reynolds,
Christina English, and myself, will reach out to all affiliated chaplains and their communities to schedule input sessions so that we can move together toward a solution.

they should carry their ID at all times when on campus in order to access the building and should not hold the door for others seeking to access the space behind them.
