Subject: Claude Lupis (1938-2019)
It is with deep sadness that we write to let you know that Claude Lupis passed away unexpectedly on Monday afternoon, July 8, 2019. Claude was a true scholar and gentleman, and a friend and integral member of the Practice School community for 15 years before he retired in 2018; over this period he directed domestic and international Practice School stations in Singapore, Switzerland, UK, Italy, Brazil, and various locations in the US.

Claude received his DSc in Materials Science and Metallurgy from MIT before joining the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, where he was a highly respected researcher and teacher, and published his influential book on “Chemical Thermodynamics of Materials”. After 15 years at CMU, Claude was lured away from academia to work in the mining and metallurgical industries, first with AMAX in Denver, and then as President of Soricom in Italy, before moving to Sydney, Australia, where he was Director of Devex Ltd., and subsequently established his own consulting company, Claude Lupis and Associates. He returned to MIT in 1997 as a Visiting Professor and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and joined the Chemical Engineering Practice School team as Station Director in 2003.

Claude will be dearly missed, and will be remembered as a truly caring and inspirational colleague and Practice School mentor by all who have known and worked with him.
