At the beginning it was and is OK now to dance men with men and woman with woman in order to practice. What does not look good and is not OK is to do it in a * formal milonga *, it should be done in a practica, (Special place to practice dancing and dancing steps). Back in the 1940s we where practicing with other boys and the first thing we learned was to follow, but in the milongas we danced with girls.
