Most people here in Argentina never use Lunfardo, further more its use is considered to be a vulgarity. Most of us were first exposed to it through Tango Lyrics. Unless you are interested in certain tango lyrics you can totally ignore it . Your chances of ever being exposed to one word of Lunfardo is almost nil. Rosetta Stone may be very good but it is very expensiv; if I were to explore Spanish I would start with an inter-active system such as: Michel Thomas Beginners, then Advanced and finally Vocabulary. The singular you in many Spanish dialects is usted if formal, tu if informal or familiar. In Rioplatense tu is replaced by vos. The verb- form used with vos is different than in most other Spanish dialects, but don't ask me how. I'm still struggling with verb forms in general. Some commonly used nouns are different in Argentina, but you simply have to get used to hearing them. There are too many to list and memorize. I checked the dictionary of lunfardo on line. Letter A : I found 12 words that I recognized - Out of those words I would probably occasionally use two. Letter B : I found 17 words that I recognized - out of those words I could use about 9. The use of lunfardo could be more prevalent in some social circles. Many words filtrated into daily language. You will be able to communicate if you totally ignore lunfardo. When somebody uses a lunfardo word or expression that you do not understand they will then use another word or expression to make sure they are understood. _________________________________________________________________ Send e-mail faster without improving your typing skills. http://windowslive.com/online/hotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_hotmail_acq_speed_122008 From tempehuck at gmail.com Fri Jan 2 12:38:45 2009 From: tempehuck at gmail.com (Huck Kennedy) Date: Fri, 2 Jan 2009 10:38:45 -0700 Subject: [Tango-L] Spanish In-Reply-To: <20090101.172341.22206.0@webmail07.dca.untd.com> References: <20090101.172341.22206.0@webmail07.dca.untd.com> Message-ID: On Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 6:23 PM, larrynla at juno.com wrote: > > The singular you in many Spanish dialects is usted if formal, tu if > informal or familiar. I'm still struggling with verb forms in general. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voseo appears to be a fairly comprehensive report, best one I've seen so far on the internet. The article mostly assumes the reader is already aware that a second person plural form vosotros can still be found in Spain (most countries just use ustedes for both formal and familar). The conjugations for the singular vos are a takeoff (with several variations) on the vosotros form. At the end of the article, they claim Costa Rica uses vos. I've spent a lot of time on the southwest coast, and a few days in San Jose as well, and I never heard it in either place. What I did hear a lot of was using usted for the familiar, even amongst family members, which I found to be quite odd. It's amazing that it's free. It contains learning, reviewing, reading and writing exercises complete with colorful photos depicting the meaning of the words or sentences. A network of language-learning pals from all over the world correct your writing and your pronunciation. You return the favor by correcting short compositions written in your native language. Another site is www.mangolanguages.com. However, I had trouble getting beyond the first sample lesson. Hope you enjoy livemocha as much as I do. I still have some photos of me and her in my screensaver folder and maybe I should upload one to my tribe.net album with a few words of farewell to a friend I respected very much. Bibi had a way of looking stunningly pretty and perfect on each and every photo of her and she had lots of them as she would travel around the world, go to the milonga whereever she was, put her arms around the shoulders of the people around her and have her picture taken this way. I got to see all kinds of interesting tango dancers this way that I had only heard about before. I would like to say that Bibi Wong was also the one who went to Triangulo, New York and took a photo of Carlos Lima, and then went to Club Canaro in Tokyo and took a photo of me, and sent those photos to both of us. This was in the age when digital cameras were not so popular yet but she had one, and this way Carlos and I could finally see each other, after writing to each other almost every day for a year already. Puro tango is closed, too. TangoXXI aka Zero hour with Juan Guida is still there. Cristian Lopez is to be found at Momo's studio in Denenchofu now. El Abrazo is low on customers but worth a visit for the music. The rest I do not consider worth going to, unless you want to go visit Tropicana in Roppongi to see if any traveling tango stars are teaching there. Ask those guys in Melbourne, I have led several of them around here already and mail me in private for more quickie Astrid Rodney Daniells wrote: > Hi > > I'll be in Japan from 21st March to 2nd April and am looking for milongas in Tokyo and Kyoto during that period. > > Any information would be greatly appreciated. > > Kind regards > Rodney > _________________________________________________________________ > I From tangogjm at yahoo.com Thu Jan 29 15:34:41 2009 From: tangogjm at yahoo.com (greg messina) Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2009 12:34:41 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Tango-L] New Tango Networking Site Message-ID: <223985.17006.qm@web51909.mail.re2.yahoo.com> Hola, We recently launched an online Argentine Tango community network.?This site now represents 23 states and 14 countries and has had over 8,000 hits in just a few short weeks.
