MILONGA DEL INDIO, PLAZA DORREGO, AT
RISK

Through this statement we want to
announce to the whole  community of the city of Buenos Aires, the
risk situation of the legendary Milonga del Indio de Plaza Dorrego.
As is well known, the neighbors of San
Telmo and the whole city of Buenos Aires have in Plaza Dorrego a
space to meet and develop one of the most original creations of our
popular culture: Tango dancing.

Every Sunday, since twenty year ago and
with the impulse, organization and constant presence of dancer Pedro
Benavente known as "el Indio", plaza Dorrego transforms
into a popular, open, free and inclusive milonga where many, from new
and old generations took our first steps to tango and continue
dancing every Sunday.

This space is managed without any
subsidy or public support, is sustained with the presence of Pedro, a
group of neighbors that collaborates in the organization, and through
voluntary contributions (cap) that each participant can or wishes to
give. With these contributions we bought the floor mats, lights,
stereos, without any collaboration but that the contribution of the
neighbors.

Of course many believe that this
milonga, which is already an icon of San Telmo district of Buenos
Aires, contained in all cultural and tourist maps of the city, should
have some official backing, but what we have to report now is a much
more delicate matter: PLAZA DORREGO HAS BEEN OCCUPIED, FOR SOME YEARS
NOW, WITH THE TABLES OF THE SURROUNDING BARS WHICH STARTED TAKING THE
PUBLIC SPACE FROM THE MILONGA AND THE NEIGHBORS ATTENDING IT. FOR
SOME TIME NOW WE HAVE BEEN VICTIMS OF CLAIMS, VERBAL AGGRESSION, AND
FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW WE HAVE RECEIVED PHYSICAL ATTACKS FROM THE
MANAGEMENT OF THOSE STABLISHMENTS: THEY HAVE SHOWED UP WITH SUBJECTS
HOLDING BATS AND HAVE BROKEN SOME OF OUR WORK INSTRUMENTS TRYING TO
INTIMIDATE US.

We are also victims of constant
complaints to the police saying we have no right to occupy the spaces
we have occupied for 20 years: the porteños have no right to express
ourselves through the most authentic of our popular culture in a
square that is PUBLIC, because some men want to occupy it with their
businesses of exorbitant prices that can only be paid by foreign
tourists.

This attitude besides being selfish and
unfair is suicidal because the tourists don't go to San Telmo for its
fashionable bars, they go for its culture, its architecture, and
especially because it is a reservoir of the tango culture in our
city.

Faced with this situation that is
becoming increasingly MORE AGGRESSIVE AND DELICATE, SINCE LAST
WEEKEND POLICE THREATENED WITH ARRESTING THE ORGANIZERS, we want to
ask, to the neighbors of Buenos Aires in general and in particular to
the milonguero community, support  for this constant harassment to
desist. 

ALL WE ASK IS AN ACT OF PHYSICAL PRESENCE IN PLAZA DORREGO
NEXT SUNDAY AT 6PM; LET'S MEET THERE TO DO ONE OF THE THINGS WE LOVE
MOST: DANCE TANGO.


WITH OUR PRESENCE WE WILL SHOW THOSE
BARS THAT OUR MILONGA IS NOT A BUSINESS BUT MUCH MORE THAN THAT, IT
IS A GENUINE PRODUCT OF OUR POPULAR CULTURE THAT THE PORTEÑOS,
PARTICULARLY THE TANGO DANCERS, ARE WILLING TO DEFEND. THE POLICE,
WHO ARE MEDIATING BETWEEN THE CLAIMS OF THE BARS AND THE RIGHTS OF
THE NEIGHBORS, WILL REALIZE THAT THE MILONGA IS NOT A WHIM OF THE
NEIGHBORS BUT ONE WAY TO EXERCISE THE LEGITIMATE RIGHT WE ALL HAVE TO
ENJOY OUR CULTURE.
